Learn the principles of Bitcoin.
What is money?
You may think of money as paper or coins you can hold in your hand, but that hasn't always been the case. What people use as money has changed over the years. Long ago, people used salt, stones, and even seashells.
Today, the creators of Bitcoin believe it's time to change money again, and it's believed that this new form of money could not only make it easier to send money around the world, without borders or intermediaries, but could also help create a fairer financial system for all humans around the planet.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a digital currency that is changing the way the world uses money, whether it's sending it, spending it, or even using it as a long-term savings account—a store of value.
Unlike cash in your pocket, Bitcoin is 100% digital and uses something we call “blockchain technology.”
A blockchain is a type of digital ledger where transactions are recorded securely and transparently. Each block in the chain contains information from multiple transactions, and once added to the chain, it cannot be changed. It's like a public record that everyone can see, but no one can alter—that is, it's immutable.
That makes Bitcoin a form of money you can control 24/7. It also makes it difficult to manipulate. No person, bank, or government can decide who has access to your Bitcoin or how much it's worth. And you can use it anytime, no matter where you are, to send and receive money near or far.
How does Bitcoin work?
Bitcoin works thanks to the Bitcoin network, a 100% digital financial system that uses a “blockchain.”
Blockchain is a secure ledger technology used to track and verify payments. Every time someone sends or receives bitcoins, that transaction is recorded in a block. These blocks are grouped and connected together in a chain, creating a secure and permanent history of all transactions. Each block has a unique code, called hash, that links it to the previous one, making it nearly impossible to change or falsify.
On the other hand, a blockchain confirms each transaction multiple times through a distributed network of computers around the world, known as "miners." These miners verify transactions and ensure the security of the network. Furthermore, the entire network is fully encrypted, meaning that the data of each transaction is protected by a special code, making it virtually impossible to alter. In short, an encrypted system is one in which information is protected and secured.
Why does Bitcoin have value?
Bitcoin is a new way to invest for the long term. It's an opportunity to own something rare and unique. Like gold, there's a limited supply of bitcoins. It was designed so that only 21 million bitcoins would ever be created. And there's no way to create more. Bitcoin is also an opportunity to be part of the future. When you own bitcoins, you're investing in a technology that's changing the way the world uses money. Furthermore, Bitcoin doesn't rely on banks or governments; it's secure and uncounterfeitable, giving those who use it confidence.
